Calling itself “Napa Valley’s Main Street,” St. Helena was first settled in 1834 as a rural agricultural center. It has evolved into a thriving population and visitor center of Napa Valley’s wine industry. General business, banking and tourism are its main employers and modes of commerce.
With a population of approximately 5,800, the town maintains a small town atmosphere while enjoying an ambiance of relaxed sophistication due to its abundance of fine dining, boutiques, galleries and inns. In fact, downtown St. Helena is about as idyllic as a small town can get. Its main thoroughfare is arched with Sycamore trees and is marked at its north end by the historic building housing the Culinary Institute of America. Between there and the commerce district are several blocks of well-kept homes, including many dating back to the 1800s.
